What Is a Popcorn Ceiling?
Popcorn ceiling, also known as stucco or acoustic ceiling, is a textured ceiling popular in home construction from the 1950s to the 1980s. It was made using a spray-on technique that left a rough and bumpy texture on the ceiling that resembles “popcorn”.
Why remove Popcorn Ceiling?
Popcorn ceiling became unpopular due to its unattractive appearance and tendency to collect dust, dirt, and grime over time. The materials used to texture the ceiling contain asbestos fibres, which can become airborne when disturbed. When exposed to these fibres, it can cause serious health issues, such as respiratory illness and lung cancer
How do you cover up Popcorn Ceiling?
Skim Coating
Skim-coating is the Most cost-effective method for covering up popcorn ceilings. Skim coating only requires three visits and doesn’t require the removal of the popcorn texture, which can be messy and potentially hazardous if the popcorn
contains asbestos.
Drywall
This method involves attaching a new layer of 1/4, or 1/2-inch- thick drywall to the ceiling joists over the popcorn texture. Adding drywall can help with insulating a ceiling especially if you're experiencing cold drafts from the roof. This method is time-consuming and also requires all seams and screw heads to be covered with drywall joint compound.
