Taping & Plastering

What is a Joint Compound?

The joint compound is a gypsum paste used to smooth and strengthen all drywall joints. joint compound, also called drywall mud, comes in both pre-mixed and powdered forms.

What is Drywall Tape?

Drywall tape is a sturdy paper or fibreglass tape that creates a strong bond and seals the joints between drywall sheets. The tape holds drywall compound  in place and prevents the compound from sagging before it dries.

  • Paper tape is non-elastic, non-adhesive, and must be set with a joint compound.
  • Fibreglass mesh tape is self-adhesive and sticks to the drywall before the joint compound is applied.

Cost factors for Taping:

  • Drywall Panel Size ("The larger the Size, the Fewer the Joints, the Better the Price.")
  • Drywall Installation Process ("More Joints, More Compound, More Money.")
  • Walls and ceiling height
  • Room shape and layout
  • Building age and condition

How long does it take for Taping?

This depends on the size and temperature of the project. Standard taping usually takes 3-5 days for smaller projects and 1-3 weeks for larger project.

Applying the joint tape and drywall mud is a quick process, but the Compound must dry for at least 24-48 hours between each coat. Most projects require 3 coats of mud followed by final sanding.

Popcorn Ceiling Removal

What Is a Popcorn Ceiling?

Popcorn ceiling, also known as stucco or acoustic ceiling, is a textured ceiling popular in home construction from the 1950s to the 1980s. It was made using a spray-on technique that left a rough and bumpy texture on the ceiling that resembles “popcorn”.

Why remove Popcorn Ceiling?

Popcorn ceiling became unpopular due to its unattractive appearance and tendency to collect dust, dirt, and grime over time. The materials used to texture the ceiling contain asbestos fibres, which can become airborne when disturbed. When exposed to these fibres, it can cause serious health issues, such as respiratory illness and lung cancer

How do you cover up Popcorn Ceiling?

Skim Coating

Skim-coating is the Most cost-effective method for covering up popcorn ceilings. Skim coating only requires three visits and doesn’t require the removal of the popcorn texture, which can be messy and potentially hazardous if the popcorn

contains asbestos.

Drywall

This method involves attaching a new layer of 1/4, or 1/2-inch- thick drywall to the ceiling joists over the popcorn texture. Adding drywall can help with insulating a ceiling especially if you're experiencing cold drafts from the roof. This method is time-consuming and also requires all seams and screw heads to be covered with drywall joint compound.

Why Hire a Professional?

Hiring a professional for the removal of your popcorn ceiling offers many advantages. A professional will have the tools and know-how to safely and effectively remove your popcorn ceiling. They will also know how to address any potential asbestos problems that may be present in the popcorn material.

Removing popcorn ceilings will almost always increase a home’s value. Not only is the design trend no longer desirable, but it also poses safety concerns for home buyers.
